Being an assessor with Our Special Friends

Our assessor Sammie faced straight on and smilingMy name is Sammie and I have been an AAA volunteer for OSF for around 5 years now alongside my faithful little lurcher Doris. We’ve encountered a range of clients with many stories and forever friendships gathered along the undulating journey that is life!

I have recently become an assessor and I enjoy the flexibility that comes with this role, which I can easily fit in with work life, hobbies, and chores.

I have found being an assessor has helped me further develop my communication skills as it is really important to ask the right questions to help understand the client’s needs but, the secret is I believe, not to sit with pen and paper poised which is quite impersonal but instead listen, enjoy a chat, maybe a cup of tea … it is surprising what you may discover in an hour.

I leave the client feeling hopeful and uplifted and complete the paperwork later at my leisure when I have time to reflect on that day’s adventures!

It is a rewarding experience that I am enjoying, a chance to meet new faces – but the best part of this job is the return visit …. with a possible match… the sheer joy on the client’s face and sometimes tears all around when they meet their volunteer and most importantly their four-legged friend.
