If you haven’t experienced poor mental health first hand, it can be hard to comprehend the devastating impact it can have upon the individual, their relationships and their families.

Our Special Friends supports Mental Health Awareness Week and recognise that mental wellbeing and the ability to cope at times of vulnerability can be enhanced enormously by the support of an animal companion. An animal can bring the silent comfort that is sometimes needed at a very low point, or bring a life-line to help someone cope through one of the toughest times they have ever had to face in their life.

Our collaborative approach with local networks and specialist services can sustain independent wellbeing through our early intervention, thus alleviating a problem before it becomes acute or life threatening.

‘Without my pets I have nothing…

A moving interview with Dorothy who explains just how important her pets are to her and what a difference they make to her life.. When asked ‘What do your pets mean to you?’, she replied: ‘Everything. Meg, my dog (the cats as well), they are my life… without which, I think I really would lose the will to even try anymore.’

Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event when there is an opportunity for the whole of the UK to focus on achieving better mental health. Each year the Foundation continues to set the theme, organise and host the Week. This year they are focusing on loneliness and are raising awareness of the impact of loneliness on our mental health and the practical steps we can take to prevent it.
