CASE EXAMPLE – Veterinary visits, administration of medication and AAA

Case Summary
OSF was contacted by Ash Tree vets to see if we could arrange transport to pick dog up and take him to vets for visits/treatment.  The case was taken on by OSF and proved to be challenging and time-consuming.  The dog was suffering from coughing/breathing problems, bronchitis, pneumonia, inter digital dermatitis and weight problems. The dog was also found to have demodectic mange, which was causing the dermatitis between his paws; this was also being treated.

Visits were arranged, which involved collecting the dog and taking him to the vets; a round trip of over 12 miles. Various vet consults showed up different issues and involved quite a few changes of medication for the dog.

It was very clear that our client would need help to make sure that all medication and food could be administered properly and at the right time, as unfortunately it was found that the dog’s medication was not being administered properly. Sadly, the dog also had weight problems because the owner could not manage his feeding regime.

There were repeated visits during Jan, February, March and April for breathing difficulties and sadly with the help and advice given by Our Special Friends the client was able to come to the decision that it was best if the dog was euthanised. Since the loss of the client’s dog, our volunteer has continued to visit with her own dog.

This case highlights a need for a DVN who could have called in daily to give prescribed medication to the dog, which would have saved the dog some discomfort (not having correct drugs given) and the client some distress. It could have avoided the picking up, collecting and delivering of him to and from vets in some cases.  What OSF did was very much appreciated by the client as she was very fond of the dog.

Testimonial:

‘I am very grateful for all your practical help and excellent, prompt communication.’
