The impact of Pets at Home VIP Lifelines scheme

29/09/2023

Case Studies

Our Special Friends is very grateful to Pets at Home for your support through the VIP Lifelines scheme which we use to purchase food, toys and anything else which the pets of our vulnerable clients need. We hope the following stories show the impact of the scheme.

Tilly

Our Special Friends arranged foster care at very short notice for Tilly in September 2021 when her owner was fleeing from domestic abuse. At 12 years old, Tilly was a fairly old cat and needed lots of veterinary care in addition to a safe and loving home. Luckily one of our trusted volunteers was able to take her in as she was currently ‘cat free’ (having fostered for OSF in the past). Tilly’s favourite food was Whiskas, both pouches and dry, so the Pets at Home vouchers came in very handy to stock up on this brand. Sadly, just before her owner had found a house for herself and her children, Tilly had to be euthanised at the end of March 2022. However, her owners were very grateful that she had been so well looked after for her remaining days.

TILLY settled in quickly at her foster home, enjoying her favourite Whiskas food, thanks to Pets at Home VIP Lifelines.

Bobby

Labrador Bobby’s owner was an elderly lady who struggled to give him the exercise he needed due to her health. Possibly because of this, she compensated with treats, and soon his weight became debilitating. Our Special Friends became involved and a group of volunteers put on a rota to give Bobby regular walks,, along with a strict diet plan and enrichment toys such as Kongs and tug toys bought with Pets at Home vouchers. Not surprisingly Bobby also suffered from arthritis and the Pets at Home vouchers were also used to purchase Yumove capsules, of which he needed many!

Bobby did lose some weight, and began to find his walks a bit easier and go a little further, but it became apparent that it was a losing battle, as calories in were always greater than calories out. In the end, with the full support of the lady’s family, it was agreed that Bobby needed to go into foster care as a life-saving intervention, as he had become morbidly obese.

With advice from a specialist nutritional Veterinary Nurse at Liverpool University, Bobby was put on a strictly controlled and closely monitored diet and exercise plan, and in the space of just 10 weeks and 3 days he lost an incredible 13.6kg (30.1lbs/2.14st) to go from 50kg to 36.4kg!

The family of the original owner had a heart to heart, and decided it was in Bobby’s best interests to stay in the foster home, who officially adopted Bobby on 23rd June 2022. He is now getting 3 walks a day, pottering around in the garden with his adoptive family, and has loads of energy. He is still benefitting from Yumove courtesy of Pets at Home, but he’s on much fewer now as it’s based on body weight.
